Lewis and Clark Resurvey – on two WVLT preserves!

We all remember learning about the Lewis and Clark Expedition when we were in school, but can you believe it’s been 250 years since that event took place?!  In celebration, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute has organized the Lewis and Clark Resurvey.  Ecologists across the country are installing game cameras to capture today’s wildlife along the same landscapes and historic route where Lewis and Clark traveled 250 years ago.

The West Virginia Land Trust is proud to have two of our properties participating in this exciting project: Toms Run Preserve in Morgantown and Wallace Hartman Nature Preserve in Charleston.  Chris Rota, Associate Professor of Wildlife Fisheries Resources at West Virginia University, is leading the resurvey at Toms Run, with Steve Mech, Professor of Biology at University of Charleston, heading up the project at Wallace Hartman.

Game cameras have been deployed, with many of them away from the trails, but you might see one.  Please do not tamper with this equipment.  Rest assured, the footage will be run through computer software that actually deletes humans… we are not looking for you!

Stay tuned for exciting updates on what we find!
