WVLT Board Member Recognized for Service in Government
Past president and current board member Jennifer Belcher was recently recognized by the Washington State Heritage Center as the first woman to hold office in Washington State. Jennifer was the first Commissioner of Public Lands and held office from 1993-2001. She fought for comperable pay for state-employed women as a lawmaker and was the first female candidate for Lands Commissioner and the first woman to hold the office. Our National Parks - A Lesson In Early Conservation
PBS recently aired a six-part series by Ken Burns called "The National Parks: America's Best Idea". The series traces the birth of the national park idea in the mid-1800s and follows its evolution for nearly 150 years. Using archival photographs, first-person accounts of historical characters, personal memories and analysis from more than 40 interviews, the series chronicles the steady addition of new parks through the stories of the people who helped create them and save them from destruction.
